Jack Miller
has always had a soft spot for the Sachsenring, which he affectionately calls
“one of my many home GPs.” It was here, back in 2011, that he made his World
Championship debut in the 125cc class. Although that debut ended with his only
DNF at the circuit, he’s always finished every other appearance since —
including a Moto3 win in 2014 and a third place in the 2022 MotoGP race.
The
affinity between Miller and the Sachsenring — which marks the halfway point of
the 2025 MotoGP season — was clear from the first laps of Free Practice 1,
where he set the second-fastest time behind none other than the "King of
the Ring," Marc Márquez. Miguel Oliveira also impressed in the morning session,
clocking the 10th fastest time and showing great comfort aboard the Yamaha
YZR-M1 on the German rollercoaster.
In the afternoon Practice session, which
determined the top ten riders advancing directly to Q2, Miller confirmed his
form by finishing eighth, just half a second off the day’s fastest time.
Oliveira, on the other hand, ran into trouble. A technical issue early in the
session forced him to revise his strategy, and despite his efforts, he couldn’t
do better than 17th — a result that doesn’t reflect his true potential.
With
rain highly likely tomorrow morning, Miguel will need to tackle Q1 in pursuit
of one of the two transfer spots into Q2. In the afternoon, the Sprint Race
will take place on a track where overtaking is notoriously difficult — making a
good grid position absolutely crucial for scoring valuable points.
