Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP's Fabio Quartararo persevered on a difficult Monster Energy Grand Prix of Catalunya opening day. He ended the afternoon session with a lap that catapulted him to P10 in the Practice classification, earning him a direct place in Q2. Álex Rins suffered a crash just as the time attacks got under way. Unhurt, he was still able to get some more laps in at the end of the session. He wrapped up the afternoon Practice in P21 and will take part in tomorrow's Q1.

Quartararo had completed FP1 in P14, in a session that had the first 18 riders covered by less than a second. El Diablo knew the level of competition would be equally high in the Practice. He managed to post a 1'38.979s, set on lap 23/23, to secure P10 in the timesheets, 0.269s from first.

Rins finished FP1 in 21st place. The home hero was keen to make a step in the afternoon, but a crash 16 minutes before the end of the Practice cost him valuable time. He ultimately set a 1'39.752s on lap 15/17, that had him end the session in 21st place, 1.042s from the top.

The MotoGP action will resume tomorrow: FP2 will be held from 10:10-10:40 (GMT+2), followed by the qualifying sessions from 10:50-11:30, and the 12-lap Sprint that starts at 15:00.

"It was a hard day. To be honest, I'm not sure how I managed to do that one lap in the time attack, because we struggled a lot to warm the front tyre, and I did a 1'38 on the first lap. It was also a bit of a messy lap; I made some mistakes. But luckily, in the end, we still made it into Q2. The grip was super low today. Let's see what happens tomorrow."

"It was really hard. We suffered from a lack of grip and, unfortunately, I also had a small crash on my first time attack. I was coming in with red sectors, so I was pushing really hard at that time. Then I had to come into the box to take the other bike for another time attack, but I ran into two yellow flags, so it was a difficult day."
