Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP's Fabio Quartararo and Álex Rins used the opening day of the Grand Prix of the Netherlands to get a feel for the TT Circuit Assen in seriously hot conditions, with air temperatures around 36°C and track temperatures reaching 49°C. The teammates ended the afternoon in 15th and 17th position respectively, which put them on the entry list for Q1.

A red flag three minutes before the end of the Practice created an intense shoot-out when the session was restarted.

Quartararo had finished FP1 in P20 but made a good step in the afternoon session. He gave it his all in the Practice time attack in the final minutes but was unable to ride the perfect lap he had in mind. His 1'32.086s best attempt, set on lap 25/26, put him in 15th place, 0.963s from first.

Rins ended an eventful morning FP1 session in 17th place. The Spaniard worked diligently during the Practice and was ready to improve on his fastest time in the final stages. He clocked a 1'32.372s on lap 20/20, which had him rank 17th in the classifications, 1.249s off today's top result.

The teammates will be back in action for FP2, held tomorrow from 10:10-10:40 (GMT+2). The qualifying sessions will follow from 10:50-11:30, and the 13-lap Sprint will start at 15:00.

"It was a difficult first day, just in general, but the goal is to fight for points and to maximise what we have. I am especially trying to maximise the braking: braking straight is where I can brake hard. Let's see what we can do in the Sprint and the Race."

"It was tough. Unfortunately, we lost 20 minutes at the start of FP1 because of a technical mishap. I decided to do a short 'long run': I did 14 laps back to back to recover the time that we lost, and it wasn't bad. But during the Practice, in the higher temperatures on track, we were struggling. This circuit is not one of the widest on the calendar, so you have to be as precise as possible. If you make even a small mistake, you can lose a lot of time."
