The Yamaha Factory Racing Team have started their V4-powered prototype testing plan at the Grand Prix of Malaysia. Augusto Fernández set out to use the wild-card entry to gather further data to aid bike development. He wrapped up today's Practice in 23rd place, putting him on the entry list for tomorrow's Q1.
The Yamaha Factory Racing Team had hoped for fully dry track time today to ensure the gathering of as much data as possible that would be easy to compare. However, the FP1 session was soon plagued by heavy rain. Augusto Fernández finished the morning session in 22nd place and was keen to get in more laps during the 1-hour Practice. Despite spots of rain again in the afternoon, Yamaha Factory Racing Team made steps according to their testing plan, and Fernández completed 15 laps in total. The number-7 rider was keen to climb the rankings during the time attack, but an unlucky crash in Turn 9 halted his progress. His 1'59.974s best time, set on lap 11, had him finish in 23rd place in the Practice results, 2.415s from first.
The Yamaha Factory Racing Team will continue their testing programme during the Saturday MotoGP sessions: FP2 will be held from 10:10-10:40 local track time (GMT+8), followed by the qualifying sessions from 10:50-11:30, and the 10-lap Sprint, which starts at 15:00.
