Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP Team’s Franco Morbidelli and Fabio Quartararo will start this afternoon’s Gran Premi Monster Energy de Catalunya Sprint and tomorrow’s Race from 16th and 17th place on the grid respectively.
Morbidelli was off to a good start in Q1. He built speed on his first run and set a 1’39.581s on his third lap, which was enough for a provisional second place. The number-21 rider then made a quick pit stop before starting his second run with five and a half minutes remaining. He kept improving and clocked a 1’39.452s on lap 7/7. However, it wasn’t enough to keep the Italian inside the top 2. He ended the session in sixth place, 0.663s from first, putting him in 16th place on the grid.
Quartararo’s benchmark lap briefly put him in the top spot at the start of Q1. Though he improved his time on his next try, he found himself in third place. He was keen to push harder but got off track in Turn 1 and had a small crash in the gravel trap. Though okay to continue, the incident cost the Frenchman valuable time. He quickly headed back to the pits and started his second run with about four minutes still on the clock. The number-20 rider was still holding third place at the time, but other riders’ hot laps were coming in. Quartararo responded with two time improvements. His 1’39.510s, posted on lap 7/7, saw him finish the session in seventh place, 0.721s off the fastest time of Q1. He will line up in 17th place on the grid.
