Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP Team’s Fabio Quartararo and Franco Morbidelli will start this afternoon’s Gran Premio di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini Sprint and tomorrow’s Race from 13th and 19th place on the grid respectively.
Quartararo’s benchmark lap briefly put him in the top spot at the start of Q1. He bettered his time on his next try and held second place as he made a quick pit stop. The number-20 rider headed back out with five and half minutes remaining. He improved again but was still pushed outside the top 2. On his next attempt, the Frenchman had set two red sector times when he spotted yellow flags, causing him to roll out of it. He had time for one more push and set a 1’31.467s on lap 8/8. It had him finish the session in third place, 0.195s off the fastest time of Q1 and just 0.038 from a spot in Q2. He will line up in 13th place on the grid for the Sprint and Race.
Morbidelli was off to a good start in Q1. He briefly featured inside the top 2 but found himself in fifth place by the time he headed back into the pit. The number-21 rider started his second run with a little more than five minutes still on the clock. The Italian was determined to improve but due to unlucky timing ran into some yellow flags in sector 3 and 4. Once the coast was clear, he put his head down and clocked a 1’31.845s. The home rider ended the session in ninth place, 0.573s from first, putting him in 19th place on the grid.
