Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP Gear Up for Scorching Spanish GP

Following yesterday’s Jerez test session, Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP's Maverick Viñales and Valentino Rossi are in great physical form and excited to commence the 2020 MotoGP season, starting with this weekend’s Gran Premio de España.
Jerez de la Frontera (Spain), 16th July 2020
Following yesterday’s test sessions, the Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP Team have set up camp at the Circuito de Jerez-Ángel Nieto, eagerly awaiting tomorrow’s kick off of the Gran Premio de España. Riders Maverick Viñales and Valentino Rossi will again be riding at the 4.4km Jerez track and feel ready to bring the heat to this highly anticipated MotoGP season.

Viñales is in 100% racing mindset and fully motivated to battle as one of the top contenders. Though there will be no fans in the grandstands to cheer him on, the local hero is eager to please the MotoGP viewers at home and determined to return to the Jerez rostrum. He hopes to repeat or better his third place finish from last year, his first time on the podium at this track since his Moto3 win in 2013.

After an informative first outing on Spanish soil yesterday, Rossi is ready for a fierce battle in Jerez de la Frontera, a place he knows like no other. So far, he has claimed seven wins at this circuit (in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, and 2016), secured two second places (in 2008 and 2014), and achieved three third places (in 2000, 2010, and 2015) in the premier class alone. He was also successful here in the lower classes, securing a 125cc and 250cc win in 1997 and 1999 respectively, and a 250cc second place in 1998.

The Circuito de Jerez was built in 1986 and has been one of the most popular MotoGP events of the season ever since. It is blessed with good weather, beautiful scenery, fast corners, and hard braking areas, a package that promises some exciting racing action for this weekend.

With the imminent start of the 2020 MotoGP season, the Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP Team take this opportunity to highlight a special new sticker on the front cowl of both Viñales' and Rossi’s M1s during the Spanish GP. This Friday, the Marelli logo will feature proudly on the Factory Yamahas for the first time.

Just one more night’s sleep until we will officially start the first round of the 2020 MotoGP World Championship. The entire team has missed the MotoGP action enormously, so we’re all really looking forward to this – we’re like kids the night before Christmas. But we also have serious business to tend to tomorrow. Yesterday we completed a successful test, which gave us a good starting point. It had been more than four months since we last ran the 2020 M1 bikes at a race circuit, so we used the total of 180 minutes of testing time to the fullest. Vale and Maverick are ready to go now, so we will be able to push 100% right from the first session. It looks like it will be a scorching weekend here in Jerez – we aim to provide the fans with some hot racing action to match!

After the great result in the test yesterday I can’t wait to get back on my bike. I’m very optimistic going into the race. I had a good feeling with the tyres in hot conditions, with a 60 degrees track temperature the bike worked very well, and I think this is something that we have improved a lot on for this season. The problems with the heat and tyres seem to be history. For sure, FP1 and FP3 will be crucial for us to assure our direct pass into the Q2 session. We have to keep working because there is always room for improvement, and we have to keep pushing to fight for the victory on Sunday. We have to pick up in speed, that’s crucial. But for sure the Yamaha is working very well and very fast, and that’s something that gives me confidence.

It was very important to have yesterday's day of testing because we hadn't been riding our MotoGP bikes in a long time. It was a fantastic feeling to get back on the M1. It was a pretty good day. I did a good job in the morning. I used the soft tyre and had a good time. In the afternoon, the temperature was high and I struggled more. The pace was not fantastic, so tomorrow we have to work on the set-up and improve the bike. But I'm very happy to be back on track with my M1!
