Spielberg (Austria), 19th August 2023
Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP Team’s Fabio Quartararo and Franco Morbidelli will start this afternoon’s Motorrad Grand Prix von Österreich Sprint and tomorrow’s Race from 9th and 15th place on the grid respectively.

On his first run in Q2, Quartararo’s second attempt, a 1’29.157s, briefly put him in second place before he settled into third in the provisional rankings. However, once back out for his second run, the times dropped significantly. Though the Frenchman saved the best for last, a 1’29.034s on lap 8/8, he found himself in ninth place, on the third row of the grid.

Morbidelli was keen to push in the 15-minute Q1 shoot-out. His best effort on his first run held him in fourth place at the midway stage when the majority of riders returned to the pits. His 1’29.446s, set on lap 3, was only 0.151s off a top-2 spot. The Italian had time to put in two more attempts, but he didn’t find the perfect lap he was looking for. He ended the session in fifth place, 0.615s from first, putting him in 15th place on the grid.

I think we still had a little bit of a margin to make the perfect lap, but I did my best. The pace was quite good this morning, so hopefully we get a great start and can fight for a good result in the Sprint and tomorrow’s Race.

We improved today compared to yesterday. We improved by a couple of tenths, but it’s still not enough to be competitive and be with the top group. We will try something for the Sprint, try and step it up and see if we can gain some more tenths, which would be very useful.
